Donation of Assistive Devices

Distribution of Assistive Devices to People with Disabilities

  1. Introduction

KIDSEG has ensured that there is a sustained distribution of assistive devices to people with disabilities in Kisumu County. Assistive devices play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities. The devices we distribute range from mobility aids like wheelchairs and crutches to sensory aids like hearing devices and communication tools. KIDSEG has worked closely with Crotches 4 Africa organization to ensure the initiative to distribute assistive devices to people with disabilities to promote inclusion, independence, and improve overall wellbeing is sustained.

  1. Objective

The main objective of the distribution activities is to ensure that people with disabilities receive the necessary tools that allow them to perform daily activities, improve accessibility, enhance mobility, and participate fully in social and economic life.

  1. Our target population

KIDSEG aims to distribute assistive devices to different categories of people with disabilities, including but not limited to:

  • People with mobility impairments
  • Individuals with visual and hearing impairments
  • People with cognitive or learning disabilities
  • Individuals with speech and communication difficulties

The recipients typically vary in age, socio-economic status, and geographical location, with a special focus on marginalized and underserved communities.

  1. Activities involved in distribution

The distribution process includes several key activities:

  • Identification of Beneficiaries: Potential beneficiaries are identified through community outreach, health care providers, disability organizations, or social services. A needs assessment is conducted to ensure that the appropriate assistive devices are allocated based on individual requirements.
  • Device Selection and Customization: Once needs are identified, the appropriate assistive devices are selected. In some cases, these devices are customized to suit the unique requirements of the individual, such as modifications in the size of wheelchairs or adjustments in hearing aids.
  • Training and Usage Guidance: Beneficiaries are trained on how to use the devices effectively. This includes demonstrations and training sessions to ensure proper utilization and maintenance of the devices.
  • Monitoring and Follow-up: After distribution, a follow-up is often carried out to assess the impact of the devices, address any concerns, and provide maintenance or repairs as needed. This step helps ensure the devices are being used properly and remain functional.
  1. Types of assistive devices KIDSEG distribute
  • Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, and prosthetics for individuals with mobility challenges.
  • Sensory Aids: Hearing aids for those with hearing impairments, magnifying devices, Braille reading materials, and white canes for visually impaired individuals.
  • Cognitive and Learning Aids: Tools such as specialized software, communication boards, and memory aids to assist individuals with cognitive impairments.
  • Orthotic Devices: Braces and supports for individuals with physical impairments requiring additional support.
  1. Challenges in Distribution

While assistive device distribution initiatives are valuable, KIDSEG faces several challenges during distribution;

  • Limited Funding: Lack of adequate financial resources often limits the scope and reach of distribution programs.
  • Supply Chain Issues: Difficulties in outsourcing appropriate devices is a big challenge based on strict importation regulations by the Kenyan Government .
  • Awareness and Access: In some regions, people with disabilities and their families are not aware of the availability of assistive devices or the procedures to acquire them.
  • Cultural Stigmatization: In certain communities, the use of assistive devices may be stigmatized, preventing people from accessing the support they need.
